In the midst of the pre-pandemic housing crisis, Tiffiney Portee was inspired to create a pathway to affordable homeownership for anyone who wanted a piece of the American Dream. When she came to us for a brand identity and website, we helped her plug into a larger cultural conversation about inequality in housing opportunities that she played a key part in solving in her community. We built a brand for her that put the belief we shared in the forefront: that affordable home ownership is a human right for everyone.

In designing The 1st Lady’s logo, we took inspiration from her real-life calling as an actual 1st Lady, combined with her unmatched ethics and moral fiber. A life-like Caricature, with rounded, modern block-style letter forms, referenced her welcoming nature, in a teal color palette that felt optimistic and bright, like a beacon lighting the way.

    DESIGNING FOR CLARITY

The 1st Lady’s website faced several strategic challenges: an under-recognized social issue with a complicated resolution that required people to be disciplined, committed, and trust her implicitly. To overcome them all, we developed a site that felt effortless and crisp, substituting jargon and intimidating data with optimism that invited people in.

Opting for a deeper site allowed us to house more information on the topic of homeownership for first-time home buyers, while also breaking down complex issues into more digestible pieces. And no matter how deep we got into the process, we paired it with digestible step-by-step methods that keep visitors focused on the true stakes of affordable home ownership: access and wealth building.
